Why did you eat that baby?

So um...Katie and I were drinking tea and eating breakfast, waiting for Jana to wake up. We're sitting there and we see these little marmots chilling on a rock and we realize they're babies. Aww, how cute. Then Katie turns around and there's a marmot a foot away from us trying to get our food. We yell at him to get him to leave us alone. At the time we thought of him as a bold, cheeky marmot. He runs off towards the babies at some point. I make comments like "They're talking to each other." or "She's trying to get food for her babies." Then another adult marmot comes up to the rock. Uh oh. She's making noises. The other marmot scurries off, carrying one of the babies by it's neck. I was thinking the marmot was carrying the baby marmot like a dog carries puppies. Then the other marmot starts fighting the first marmot and it drops the baby. The baby does not move back to it's nest and we realize it's dead. This marmot pictured here is a baby killer. It then proceeded to eat the baby! IT ATE THE BABY!

So...it's muzzle has blood on it and a haiku was born.
One of our most eventful mornings.
Also interesting in how the marmot went from being female to male in our heads. Or my head at least.
